Founded in 1959, Superior now has over 60 stations throughout Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, and Wisconsin, making us the largest private ambulance service in the Midwest. Our services include basic life support (BLS), advanced life support (ALS), critical care transport (CCT), aeromedical transportation, and more.

Our History

Our company was founded in 1959 by David and Blanche Hill, offering the first emergency ambulance service in DuPage County, Illinois. For over 65 years, Superior Ambulance has grown to offer many different services within the EMS industry. Here’s a quick look back at pivotal moments throughout our history.

1968

Superior Air-Ground Ambulance Service Inc. is established, providing air transportation to any place in the world.

1973

Illinois Medi-Car, Inc. is established as Illinois’ first wheelchair transport company for wheelchair-bound and disabled patients.

1974

Superior is the first EMS service to employ female paramedics to staff the ambulance, providing care to the sick and injured.

1981

David B. Hill III becomes President of Superior, continuing his family’s tradition of setting high standards in the ambulance industry.

1984

Metro Paramedic Services, Inc., Inc., is established, providing paramedics, paramedic firefighters, rescue diver paramedics, ambulances, and emergency medical equipment to rural, urban and suburban municipalities, and fire protection districts.

Superior establishes the first Critical Care Transport program in Illinois.

1990

Paramedic Billing Services, Inc., is established, providing EMS billing services for municipalities.

1991

Superior establishes its first community-based station in Evanston, Illinois, beginning the rapid expansion of Superior that continues to date.

1994

NORCOMM Public Safety Communications, Inc. establishes Illinois’ first private 9-1-1 call center providing police, fire and emergency medical dispatch for villages, cities and fire districts.

1995

Superior establishes the Special Events Team, providing EMS support for community and professional events.

1997

Superior Ambulance Service establishes Courtesy Van Services.

2000

Superior Air-Ground Ambulance Service of Indiana, Inc. establishes operations. Superior redefines Critical Care Transport by incorporating Registered Nurses to function as a crew on CCT ambulances, eliminating the need for hospitals to send RN staff on transports. Superior purchases Co-Med Ambulance Service.

2003

Superior establishes operations in Rockford, IL, providing inter-facility transport, dedicated hospital standby ambulances, and supporting the Rockford Fire Department with 9-1-1 mutual aid.

2004

Superior has more than 1,300 employees and continues to break the mold as a pioneer in the private ambulance industry.

2005

Superior Air-Ground Ambulance Service of Michigan, Inc. establishes operations. Superior responds to Hurricane Katrina, Superior’s first FEMA activation.

2006

Superior relocates to its state-of-the-art Corporate Headquarters in Elmhurst, IL.

2007

Superior establishes the Air Ambulance transport division, providing aeromedical services based at DuPage County Airport.

2009

Superior celebrates 50 years of providing emergency and non-emergency transportation.

2010

Superior purchases second Airbus EC135 P2+.

2014

Superior establishes the Community Paramedicine Program.

2017

Superior Air-Ground Ambulance Service of Michigan, Inc. achieves accreditation through the Commission on Accreditation of Ambulance Services (CAAS). Superior establishes second Illinois aeromedical base at the Greater Kankakee Airport – IKK. Superior opens the Chicago Illinois Medical District Station, bringing over 100 jobs to Chicago, servicing Cook County Health.

2018

Superior Air-Ground Ambulance Service of Wisconsin Inc. establishes operations.

2019

Superior Air Ambulance achieves accreditation through the Commission on Accreditation of Medical Transport Systems (CAMTS).

2020

Superior deploys rotating crews to New York City to support EMS during the COVID-19 pandemic. Superior starts fixed wing operations with two Learjet 45XRs. Superior Air-Ground Ambulance Service of Ohio, Inc. is established, now providing medical transportation in five states.

2025

Superior hosts its first annual Continuing Education Symposium, drawing over 250 participants for continuing education, networking opportunities and more.

Today

Superior has more than 3,800 employees and continues to surpass industry standards.

Superior Life Support Training Institute (LSTI) equips healthcare providers with the skills to succeed in any conditions. With state-of-the-art technology, experienced instructors, and the latest accredited programs, we open doors to healthcare career opportunities.

Superior LSTI was established in 1986 to meet rising demand for well-trained emergency medical service professionals. Today, we offer a variety of courses, including EMS training and certifications, AHA programs, community classes for adults, special community awareness programs, and more.
